Antonis Zampelas Antonis Zampelas is President of the Management Board of the Hellenic Food Authority for a second term (1st term 2008-2010), Professor of Human Nutrition at the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at the Agricultural University of Athens and Member of the Management Board of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). He is also Honorary Professor, Division of Medicine, University College London (UCL) and Visiting Faculty, Department of Nutrition and Health, United Arab Emirates University. He is also a Registered Nutritionist (RNutr, UK). Prof. Zampelas’ undergraduate studies were in Food Science and Technology from the Agricultural University of Athens (Greece). He also holds an MSc degree in Food Science from the University of Reading (UK) and a PhD in Human Nutrition from the University of Surrey (UK). After completing his doctoral dissertation, Prof. Zampelas worked at the University of Surrey as a Research Fellow, at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, UK as a Senior Scientific Officer, and at Harokopio University, Department of Dietetics and Nutrition as Assistant Professor. At the Agricultural University of Athens, Prof. Zampelas served as the President of the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition, Deputy Head of the newly established Department of Dietetics and Quality of Life, and as a member of the Senate. At the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition, he was the Director of the Laboratory of Chemistry and Food Analysis, Chairman of the Curriculum Committee and Director of the Postgraduate Program in the field of “Nutrition, Public Health and Policies”. Prof. Zampelas has also served as the President of the Hellenic Society of Lipidology, Atherosclerosis and Vascular Diseases, Vice President of the Committee for the approval of Dietary Supplements at the National Drug Administration, Member of the National Nutrition Policy Committee of the Ministry of Health, and Member of the Executive Committee of the European Atherosclerosis Society. Prof. Zampelas is Associate Editor of the international scientific journal CLINICAL NUTRITION, member of the Editorial Board of the international scientific journal NUTRIENTS and Editor in Chief of the section “Nutritional Policies” of NUTRIENTS. He also served as the Associate Editor of the international scientific journal ATHEROSCLEROSIS. His research interests focus on the role of dietary patterns and nutrients in the prevention of chronic diseases with an emphasis on cardiovascular disease and obesity in children and adults. Prof. Zampelas is the Principal Investigator of the Hellenic National Nutrition and Health Survey (HNNHS) which was carried out in a nationally representative sample of Greek population. Professor Zampelas' interest include also the development of nutritional educational programs for Greek school children for the prevention of childhood obesity. He has been teaching in higher education since 1993 and has supervised 16 doctoral dissertations. He has been an external PhD examiner at the University of Reading (UK) and the University of Wageningen (Netherlands). He has been a reviewer of scientific research protocols at international (European Union, New Zealand, Netherlands, Cyprus) and Greek institutions. Prof. Zampelas has been invited to give more than 120 lectures at national and international conferences. For his contribution in the field of Human Nutrition, he was awarded the honorary distinction of Honorary Member of the Cyprus Association of Dietitians-Nutritionists (2021). In 1994 he received the Young Scientist of the Year Award by the British Nutrition Foundation and in 2021 he was ranked in the Top 2% worldwide in an international database in health sciences (University of Stanford). Prof. Zampelas is the editor of 2 Nutrition text books in Greek (“Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics” and “Nutrition in the Life Cycle”) and co-editor of 2 American text books ("Mediterranean Diet: Constituents and Health Promotion" and "Antioxidants in Health and Disease”). He is co-author of 22 chapters in scientific books and 185 peer-reviewed publications in the field of Human Nutrition in international scientific journals. The h-index in Google scholar is 57.
